Transcript: 'Well, it is meant to be escapist, because I use escapism in its proper sense, as a man getting out of prison. — J.R.R Tolkien Though here at journey’s end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars for ever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell. — J.R.R Tolkien I suppose, for me, fantasy is a way to ‘escape’ to a better world. Our world is fallen, and I guess it will continue to fall. Fantasy is a form of faith in the eternal realm of Goodness with God—a means to escape the bonds of the material world and return to our kindred star. I don’t claim that my sub-creations have the ability to help us out of this material prison; I simply admire those rare souls who have created such stories. Tolkien argues that there can be heroism in escapism, and that escaping allows for the condemnation of modern life. Escapism draws one toward a truer reality. Escapists are not 'servient to the whims of evanescent fashion,' and may thus focus on truer, more lasting subjects. At the same time, escape can serve as an antidote to the pain of the Fall because it recognizes that these natural limitations 'are in fact unnatural, imposed on man at the time of the Fall.' The rise of escape can be threatening to the modern world. It pulls one's soul away from false pleasures and toward the more eternal. Such people do not see much value in fancy new cars or giant homes—transient objects of the time—because they have the eternal in sight. Their joy pushes far beyond the temporary enjoyments of our current times and into the realm of the divine. You see, in this mode of being, fairy stories are much more real than temporary technologies or material luxuries.
